After Chris finished, nerves were still tense as everyone waited to see how the fight for second would turn out. It seemed that Mark had gotten it buttoned up, but Nat Ross had made an unbelievable late charge towards the end of the race and they were finishing on the same lap. If anything happened to Mark’s other bike out there . . . .
But Hendershot held on to it for a second place, with Nat coming in for third not far behind. Over the years of 24 hour solo race support you get to know very well the support crews of your competitors, and through them, you get to know the other racers too. I consider Nat and Mark to be great friends and it is awesome that they have helped push the sport so far in only the past few years. Both their crews were as together as we were, and I know we all had (yet again) the times of our lives competing in that race. There were tons of other solo competitors there too, and each one of them deserves credit for undertaking one of the hardest things you can do on a bike, race it for 24 hours straight.
As usual, there are a million thank you’s I need to make, and I’ll remember a few of them. Thanks to North Division Bicycle Shop in Spokane for their generosity and to Scott Willegallie for his hospitality while we were there. Thanks to everyone from all the other pit crews who helped us out a bit, Jude, Adam, Roberta and gang, Janice, Dave, Shane and Steve. Thanks to Erin North for the website updates. Thanks and congratulations to Alison Foreman and Mike Eatough, I love working with you guys, and thanks to Round and Round productions for putting on this event. Also thanks to Bill Gentile from Lupine lights for the Stuby that lit my way all night long-that thing is awesome.
